FRESH BUNKER - SURF CLAMS - LIVE MINNOWS - LIVE EELS

May 14 - Stripers are still consistently being found north of Barnegat Inlet. Last night (Sunday) a few bass were busting bunker less than a mile north of the north jetty & this morning same thing went on up by the Bathing Beach tight to the beach. When you're not finding the bunker with fish on them close to the beach, move out to sixty feet of water and start trolling white or green bunker spoons or shad body umbrellas. The blowfish that were around the Causeway bridges are starting to thin out & blue claw crabbing is starting to pick up. Small bluefish have been in Barnegat Bay near the ICW between the 42 to 46 buoys. Look for the terns diving & picking on the water. Best time has been at sunrise and late in the afternoon.

May 11 - Ben & John Smith (photo) christened their new 27' Grady this morning by boating four bass, ranging from twenty-four to forty -three pounds, trolling white & green (green did a little better today) bunker spoons off Seaside Park in fifty-five to sixty feet of water. This has been the trend all week at this depth with no birds & a lot of bait hard on the bottom, with most of the fish not with the bait. In the bay, blowfishing is still good around the Causeway bridges and north up to Forked River. More one to two pound blues are being caught in Barnegat Bay, Little Egg Harbor and Great Bay along with two to four pound weakfish. The best fluke fishing seems to be down in Great Bay behind the islands in the clam stakes with Gulp 4" swim mullet in pearl & chartreuse being the most effective.

May 7 - Scott Senior (photo) boated a thirty pound / forty-two inch striper late this morning trolling a blue/pearl shad umbrella rig north of Barnegat Inlet in sixty feet of water. He also caught & released two others.

May 6 - Blowfishing is the best game in town. Manahawkin Bay produced a few yesterday by the bridges along with the great amount of them up in Barnegat Bay. A few people are back at it today by the Causeway bridges. Thanks again to Julie for giving me about fifteen of them for dinner last night ... damn they're good! A call in from a couple people fluke fishing in the clam stakes down in Great Bay ... a lot of throwbacks & only a couple keepers.

May 5 - Out of our three bays, Barnegat seems to be the most productive at the moment with blowfish, bluefish, weakfish & fluke. Blowfishing is very good west of the "BB" buoy - Bluefish are being trolled on small ponytails or anchoring up and chumming with bunker chum and floating back a hook with a piece of bunker or butterfish, practically the whole length of Barnegat bay from Gulf Point to Toms River. A good showing of weakfish ranging from two to eight pounds off of Waretown to Forked River ... being caught on pink Fin-S or sandworms. Of course it is opening day for fluke, but already a good amount being caught in Barnegat bay where you can find clean bottom without slime. Also a few fluke being caught in Great Bay in the clam stake area behind the islands. A report yesterday from Bob O & Rob M fishing in Grassy Channel with clams ... nothing but skates & doggies. The LBI surf is staying consistent with ten to fifteen pound stripers being caught on bunker & surf clam ... bunker seems to be a little better and definitely picking off the larger fish. Good reports from Brant Beach to Beach Haven this morning. Anglers are holding with six ounces but will probably go to eight with an increase in wind & swell later today.

May 3 - Mixed reports from yesterday in the ocean north of Barnegat Inlet. One boat trolling bunkers spoons did nothing & the other found some fish on bunker and snagged & dropped a few fish a couple miles up the beach. Both said it was a little tasty with the NE wind & tight chop.
